Andy Murray has found his missing wedding ring.

The professional tennis player, 34, told fans on Thursday he was in possession of the sentimental ring again after it was “stolen” from a pair of tennis shoes he had hidden under his car outside a hotel in Indian Wells, California.

In a video shared on his Instagram, Murray said he recovered his ring and shoes after making “a few calls” and speaking with the hotel’s security team. He then held up his wedding ring, which was still attached to the laces of his sneakers, for the camera.

“Would you believe it? It still stinks, but the shoes are back,” he joked. “The alliance is back, and I’m back in the good books. Let’s go!”

Murray – who is married to Kim Sears, with whom he shares four children – had previously joked that he was “on the wrong books at home” when the ring went missing.

The ordeal began earlier this week when Murray returned to his hotel after a long day of training for the BNP Paribas Open tournament, according to a series of Instagram videos he posted on Wednesday.

Murray said in the footage he noticed on the ride that the car “didn’t smell good” due to his wet, sweaty and smelly tennis shoes. So he wanted to air them out before his next training session.

“I don’t have a balcony in my room and I didn’t want to leave them [inside] my room, because it’s going to stink the room, so I was like, “I’m going to leave the shoes under the car to get some air in and dry them overnight,” Murray explained with a laugh. “Anyway, when I got back to the car in the morning, the shoes were gone.”

While the athlete was able to replace his shoes, he realized that his wedding ring was also missing when he showed up for training.

“Basically I tie my wedding ring to my tennis shoes when I play because I can’t play with my hand. So yes, my wedding ring was stolen as well,” Murray said. “Needless to say I’m in the wrong books at home so I want to try and find it.”

In his Instagram story, Murray added that he traveled to California with three pairs of sneakers, but one wore out during training and he left the other two under the car.
