Father loses wedding ring ahead of diamond anniversary with late wife

One woman said she “can’t thank the staff enough” for finding her father’s lost wedding ring ahead of his diamond wedding anniversary with his late wife.

On Tuesday, August 31, great-grandfather John Craven went shopping, drove for diesel, then drove to a local car wash in St Helens before returning home.

But as he was doing the dishes later, John, 77, realized his wedding ring was missing and panicked called his daughter Sharon George.

Sharon, 53, said the family were “devastated” by the loss of the ring, not because of its value but for sentimental reasons, as this month marks what would have been the 60th wedding anniversary of his father with his mother Margaret, who died in 2015.

Sharon told ECHO the family believed the ring was permanently lost, but were surprised when they received a phone call about 45 minutes later.

She said: “I was taking care of my granddaughter and he called me and told me that I had lost my wedding ring.

“He was doing the dishes then called me and I said to check the bowl or if it’s in the sink at the back.

“I said you went somewhere else and he said he went to B&M for bread, then Tesco to get diesel like he does every week, then to the car wash. we’ll call them all and see if that’s the case.

“He was actually crying and shaking. He was shaking.

“He said it wasn’t worth a lot of money but I said it wasn’t about the money. It’s gold and it’s worth a bit if it goes to the wrong people. I didn’t think we would get it back and I think that’s what upset him the most. “

Sharon’s sister phoned B&M and Tesco while she called IMO Car Wash on Denton’s Green Lane.

The employee she spoke to explained that due to the coronavirus, they don’t get into cars unless there is service inside, but “hate when something like this happens “and would search the site.

About 45 minutes later, Sharon received a call telling her that the wedding ring had been found.

Sharon said: “As he was leaving my dad had stopped to fix his rearview mirror so we think he slipped.

“When I called him and told him he was found, he said no no. I said I would come get you and we can come down together to thank them.”

Sharon said her father lost weight and the family didn’t realize her wedding ring had grown too big.

She said the gesture was even more important as this month marks her parents’ 60th wedding anniversary. John’s wife Margaret passed away just before Christmas in December 2015.

Sharon said: “He was devastated because we lost my mom six years ago and that’s one of the sentimental things he kept throughout. I told them I can’t thank you enough.

“There are real people there.”

Sharon went to post a review on IMO Car Wash’s website, but couldn’t figure out how, so she posted about the kind gesture on a local Facebook group instead.
