Elk River police and firefighters responded to a house fire at 8:20 p.m. on August 12 in the 18400 block of Polk Circle.
The owners – a 32-year-old Elk River woman and a 30-year-old man – reported that there was an accidental spill of paint thinner in a storage area in the home’s two-story walkout basement and trying to clean something up. sparks and cause fire.
The woman told police she put a fire blanket on the fire, then went upstairs to call 911. As the fire continued to spread, the couple evacuated the residence.
Elk River Fire Chief Mark Dickinson said the basement was fully involved on arrival and crews did stop maintaining the fire that spread to the basement and stairs leading to the first floor.
“There was extensive smoke damage to all floors, but no reports of injuries,” he said.
Police and firefighters found no signs of foul play.
A wedding ring and other jewelry was later stolen from the house after it was barricaded due to the recent fire.
Authorities were called to the house in the 18400 block of Polk Circle in Elk River on a fire alarm at 9:06 a.m. on August 14. Police and fire departments arrived at the scene and found a smoke detector in the basement that was ringing.
There was vandalism and graffiti inside the house and the jewelry, estimated to be worth $ 3,010, was missing.
Elk River Police Captain Joe Gacke said the case was still under investigation and the person (s) responsible for the heist had not yet been identified.
